Drop-off
We will give you exact location after registration, we meet in the Coconino National Forest near Mountainaire, which is the neighborhood at exit 333 on I-17, three miles south of the Fort Tuthill / Airport Exit in Flagstaff. Kids hike up to the plateau where camp lives from the drop off trail head, which is accessible by any car, although you get slightlky closer with a higher clearance vehical on the short portion of forest road to the trail head. Then they get their packs ready to go for the day.
Morning Circle
After the kids have been greeted by their Trail Wizards and Trail Wizards in Training, as well as the Witches we have a circle with songs or skits, info for the day.
Our sessions include a maximum of 24 campers ages 7-12, with 6 young adult counselors (Trail Wizards) and 4-8 Trail Wizards in Training (ages 13 - 15) as well as 1 - 4 adult Witches from our Board. The campers are divided into three small family groups which are then each led by two Wizards and 2 or more TWITS and they belong to that same group for their entire session(s).
Adventure Hike
We spend most of the morning on an adventure, hiking around the forest to various locations chosen by the TWITS and Trail Wizards with the help of returning and new campers. Most adventures clock in 3-7 miles of hiking and playing on and off trail. We provide hydration packs for every camper, as well as snacks (fruit, all natural apple sauce, granola bars, nuts, goldfish crackers, peanutbutter crackers etc), journals, art supplies, compasses and kids’ pocket knives for whatever the adventure brings out way.
Free Time
During free time campers can choose to explore in a multitude of ways.
In Ninja Land, there are small ziplines, ninja courses, swings, and tools for building and exploring as well as hammocks for resting and playing.
In Artsy Land, they make slime and oobleck and do science experiments, paint, draw, sculpt, do origami, play music, read, write, face paint and play games.
In Adventure Land, returning campers and Wizards help show them the ropes as far as lizard catching, big catching, plant identification, geode cracking an, geocaching, climbing/bouldering and or whatever catches their fancy in the way of mini-adventures.
During free time campers choose their own way and often devise new and interesting activities for themselves. The wizards spend this time checking in with their campers and participating in activities and helping campers to find their way if they are not sure what to choose.
NEW THIS YEAR Camp Out Nights
On the second Thursday of each session (June 25 / July 9 / July 23) Campers stay over at camp for a campout. We will provide dinner and snacks and breakfast, you will provide sleeping bags, toothbrushes, PJs and stuffies.
Drop off on Thursday will bring us to a regular camp day with more free time and activities in the afternoon leading to special camp out activities and a night hike before bed time. On the following Friday families are invited to come to an early lunch and pick-up at noon. If your family opts out of the camp out just let us know, and we will arrange pick-up on Thursday and drop-off Friday with you.
Lunch
Lunch is prepped by a team of wizards and trail wizards as well as camper volunteers. We eat family style and can easily provide gluten free, vegetarian, nut-free, and lactose free choices. The registration form provides us with all your campers dietary info, but feel free to talk to us specifically about anything. Campers are provided mostly whole food healthy choices in the categories of protein, vegi, fruit, and grain and the standard is that they must eat one thing from each category but they choose their own portion sizes. Most campers take seconds and thirds and you will be amazed at the healthy spread and the effectiveness of community norms in getting your child to eat delicious healthy lunch every day! We drink water. All day we drink water. This is a goal, to drink all of the water.
Journals
Our small groups take turns leading journals each day with a skit or a song to inspire everyone’s creativity. THen we write and or draw in our jounrals for about 20 minutes and people who want to share their work with others.
Free Time
Chores and Closing Circle
At the end of the day each small group (or coven) works to help cleanup a portion of camp and put everything right for the night, then we meet for a closing circle and share some highs and lows from the day before running down the plateau to pick-up
